What We Do

The work of the Institute for Women’s Health (IWH) is organized into four core areas:

1. Research
The IWH supports several research studies currently underway within the university.

The IWH is also working with other investigators at the university to foster research in different areas of women’s health including sexually transmitted diseases, menopause, and other areas.

In addition, the IWH offers programs to promote women’s health research within the university. This is achieved through:

  • Awarding annual development research grants to university faculty in order to pursue new research ideas in women’s health.
  • Holding an annual Women’s Health Research Day, to be initiated in 2008, which showcases women’s health research within the community and brings a national focus to the university’s research in women’s health, with a nationally recognized honorary chair and keynote speaker.

2. Clinical Services
Within the University of Miami and Jackson Health System, the IWH is developing a comprehensive women’s health care program to:

  • Provide evidence-based exemplary care to women.
  • Train medical students, residents, and attending physicians in women’s health care.
  • Cultivate clinical research opportunities specific to women’s health.

One component of this endeavor is the Women’s Comprehensive Care Clinic,  implemented in collaboration with the Departments of Internal Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as the Jackson Health System.

3. Education and Training
The IWH assesses the women’s health educational needs of health care professionals both on campus and in the community and develops educational programs to meet these needs. This includes continuing medical education – both CME and CEU – events on campus and in partnership with organizations in the community.

In addition, the IWH offers a Pathway in Women’s Health for University of Miami medical students.

4. Community Service and Outreach
The IWH provides information and services to the Miami-Dade community in partnership with community organizations and leaders. The IWH is working to bring together women and community leaders with a passion for women’s health issues to educate them on the status of women’s health in the county and set an agenda for action around women’s health in Miami-Dade.

We also offer to local employers: Health Matters: Information for Women Across the Life Span, a lecture series in women’s health for their employees. Experts from the IWH and university go to Miami-Dade workplaces to share information on the latest topics in women’s health.
